The Staging Method: Peritoneal Mesothelioma Stage 4
Peritoneal Mesothelioma Stage 4 may be unheard of as this type of Mesothelioma is not typically addressed using the staging system. However, it does not stop those who have just been diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma from trying to get an insight into the disease.
Specialists typically only use the 4 different staging method to describe Pleural Mesothelioma. This is largely due to the fact that in Peritoneal cases, the tumor cannot be detected in its early stages. Not only that, due to its aggressive nature, the tumor typically spreads in short period of time. These reasons make it difficult for specialists to determine the stages. However, a few doctors still adopt the staging method to communicate the severity as well as the metastasis of Peritoneal Mesothelioma.
The difference between Peritoneal and Pleural
There are two types of malignant Mesothelioma, the Pleural and Peritoneal. The difference lies in the location affected by the tumor. In Pleural, the tumor develops on the lining of the sufferer's’ lungs whereas in Peritoneal, it develops along the sufferers’ peritoneum. While this type of Mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose, patients commonly suffer from abdominal swelling and localized pain in the abdominal area.
Patients with Peritoneal Mesothelioma Stage 4 commonly suffer from hypoglycemia, bone pain, nerve problems, and Homer’s syndrome. These symptoms typically appear years after patients’ initial asbestos exposure. What is worse is the fact that many of these patients only learned about their condition after it has progressed to advanced stages.
The stages of Peritoneal Mesothelioma
In early stage of this disease, patients are usually treated using extrapleural pneumonectomy surgery. This type of surgery is an attempt to get rid of the tumor in order to stop growth altogether. Patients who are diagnosed in early stage has high rate of survival.
In stage 2, the tumor is considerably larger in size and has now invaded the patient’s diaphragm. Lymph nodes may or may not have been involved as well in this stage. Similar extrapleural pneumonectomy procedure may still be an option. Patients who are diagnosed with Peritoneal Mesothelioma once they have reached the third stage may already be suffering from extreme chest pain due to infected esophagus and chest wall.
In the final stage of this disease, the mesothelioma has now metastasised to lymph nodes, diaphragm, pericardium and multiple internal organs. The cancer may also be detected in the bones, liver, and even bloodstream. The only available treatment option for Peritoneal Mesothelioma Stage 4 is radiation and intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
